The definition of biodegradable is that a material can undergo a biological anaerobic or aerobic decomposition that leads to the production of CO2, H2O, methane, biomass and mineral salts depending on the environmental conditions of the process. Microorganisms play an important role in biodegradation. These are found in the environment and feed mostly on organic waste. Unlike compostable, however, the term biodegradable does not say much further because in principle everything is biodegradable if it only takes a long enough time. Thus, it is very important to specify in which environment the biological degradation is intended to take place.
